China's gross domestic product reached US$ 3.6 trillion at purchasing power parity1 or about half that of the US, generated by a population of 1.226 billion. 1996 retail price inflation was contained to around 10010, while private consumption growth accelerated to 8.5010, with gross domestic investment growth projected to average 13.8% per year (Two-year economic outlook: China 1996).
